On the Grow was born to serve Houston's children and communities. You'll see that we call our gardens "Wellness Gardens." We recognize that wellness is a state of mind. This mindset includes being compassionate with ourselves, learning from our mistakes, and holding space for growth.
On the Grow's mission is to enrich communal wellness by creating and nurturing gardens in urban areas.
By embracing all people of any background or level, we bring equanimity to community with the goal of learning together. There is always something new to learn in the garden- from the novice to the expert. We are proud to continue sharing the spirit of inconsequential learning each time we step foot into the garden.
OUR STORY
The Girl
on the Grow
Known in community as "The Girl on the Grow," Janice Brown is the coach who started it all. A 17-year veteran in public school education, she noticed how many students benefitted from the opportunity that gardens created.
In the words of Janice, "gardens are about giving ourselves the grace and space to make mistakes."
She founded On the Grow in 2011 with the intention of providing that safe space. After over a decade of growing in communities, schools, and home gardens, Janice continues fulfilling the mission of On the Grow. When she's not in the garden, she's quilting or spending time with
her family and friends.
